네이버웹툰 ‘귀인’, 드라마 제작 확정..‘가짜 이강석 사건’ 주요 모티브

브레이크뉴스 박동제 기자= 네이버웹툰에서 인기리에 연재됐던 <귀인>(원작: 정연식, 각색&그림: 황진영)이 드라마로 제작된다.

작품의 제작을 맡은 만화전문기획사 재담미디어는 최근 드라마화에 대한 계약이 성사됐다고 밝혔다.

<귀인>은 1957년에 실제로 일어났던 사건을 바탕으로 제작된 작품으로, 당시 대통령과 부통령 두 사람을 아버지로 둔 황태자 이강석의 막강한 신분을 사칭해 세간의 이목을 집중시켰던 이른바 ‘가짜 이강석 사건’을 주요 모티브로 한다.

주인공 ‘양춘식’은 대담한 사기극으로 가짜 이강석이 돼 부정부패와 권력에 빌붙어 아첨하는 시대의 단면을 그려냈다. 그래서 ‘귀인(MR. Royal)’은 양춘식에 대한 권력자들의 시선을 반영해 보이는 제목이기도 하다. 이와 함께 같은 시대를 살았지만, 금수저인 이강석과 흙수저인 양춘식의 신분이 대비되면서 사회적 메시지를 던지기도 했다. 

무엇보다 시대적 고증, 이를테면 건물의 간판, 인물들의 복식 그리고 벽지의 광고문구에 이르기까지 철저하게 1950년대 후반의 분위기를 살려놓음으로써 연재 당시 독자들로부터 감탄을 불러일으킨 바 있다.

또한 <귀인>은 발표 당시에 원작자가 유명 웹툰작가이자 영화감독이라는 점이 화제가 됐다. <또디>, <달빛구두> 등 1990년대 후반부터 2000년대 중후반까지 기발한 유머와 따뜻한 감성이 돋보이는 작품을 선보였던 정연식이 원작자였던 것. 

CF 감독이자 웹툰 작가였던 그는 2013년 자신의 웹툰 <더 파이브>를 원작으로 마동석, 김선아 주연의 스릴러 영화 <더 파이브>의 각본과 각색, 감독으로 이름을 올리기도 했다.


<귀인>은 정연식의 3년간 밀착 취재로 4고의 시나리오가 나왔고, 작품의 대중성과 상업성을 알아본 유명 만화전문기획사 재담미디어에서 본격 웹툰화가 진행됐다. 
기획에 맞는 그림과 근대 배경의 시대극에 맞는 황진영 작가가 섭외돼 1년이 넘는 준비 기간 동안 작화에 완성도를 높여 독자를 만나게 됐다. <귀인>은 웹툰 연재와 동시에 영상화에 관한 러브콜이 지속적으로 나왔던 작품이다.
이번에 <귀인>의 드라마를 제작하게 될 운상미디어는 <귀인> 외에도 <데드라이프>, <항변신> 등 이미 다수의 웹툰원작 IP를 확보하면서 웹툰의 드라마화에 대한 지속적인 제작을 계획하고 있다. 특히 십수년 동안 다양한 드라마를 만든 경험을 지닌 이들이 제작진으로 구성돼 <귀인>의 드라마에 더욱 관심이 높아지고 있다.
운상미디어의 한 관계자는 “변화하는 영상콘텐츠 환경에 맞춰 TV뿐만 아니라 OTT 시장에서 경쟁력을 가질 수 있는 드라마를 제작할 것이다”면서 “그러한 변화의 선상에 <귀인>은 중요한 변곡점이 될 것이라 생각한다”고 이번 계약에 대한 기대감을 드러냈다.
한편, 재담미디어는 최근 들어 <약한 영웅>, <상남자>, <청춘블라썸>, <하지점>, <아기가생겼어요> 등 이른바 ‘대작’들을 지속적으로 선보이면서 세간의 화제를 불러왔다. 
동시에 이러한 대작들의 영상화도 이끌어냄으로써 웹툰뿐만 아니라 콘텐츠 업계 전반으로부터 주목을 받고 있다. 특히 네이버 빅히트작 <약한 영웅>의 드라마는 올 하반기에 방영을 앞두고 있어 관심이 높아지고 있다.
